This is the cherry… and union solidarity !

Place the newcomer to the Quebec landscape unionism : Industrial Union of Workers - Industrial Workers of the World. This is an international union, established since 1905. His creation then responds to the desire of workers to organize horizontally, in a radically democratic union. therein, the IWW opposes the bureaucratic tendencies of other trade union organizations.

The harshness of the social struggles of the time necessitated a mode of organization capable of uniting the entire workforce. Opposing fragmented unionism, unduly dividing workers according to their trade, the IWW is organized in industrial unions. In an industrial union, all workers in the same field of activity, working in a given region are grouped within the same union premises, regardless of the type of task performed and regardless of the company that hires them. Through their union organization, workers refuse the divisions imposed on them by the capitalist economy and thus prepare for the advent of a new society in the shell of the old.

What makes us unique?

In the landscape of North American unionism, our history makes us unique. We are the only union to demand direct action, industrial unionism and radical democracy. The IWW is a union without bureaucrats, which practices a unionism of solidarity where it is the workers who lead and organize their struggle.

Today more than ever, different unionism is needed. More and more, we operate in areas where the dominant unions cannot or will not venture out. In the current job market - characterized by a constantly expanding service sector, by the boundless development of atypical work, of subcontracting and employment agencies, and where precariousness is more and more the norm – industrial unionism is essential. To be able to organize our workplaces effectively, we must be able to count on the solidarity of all workers in the same industry or throughout the workforce. Only in this way can we improve our working conditions and our living conditions.

Without further ado, let's organize!
