Series about the horrors faced by migrant workers
It's rare, but it happens. Sometimes, the big media monopolies publish interesting information, with a favorable view to workers. This is what just happened in the newspaper The Press, where journalist André Noël publishes a series of articles on migrant workers struggling in our Quebec countryside to pick fruits and vegetables produced in Quebec, thus echoing complaints from Noé Santos against the Quebec company Savoura, that we had relayed last December.
We learn in particular that the Guatemalan workers, who are now more likely to work in the fields than Canadian citizens, experience very harsh working conditions, with longer working hours than the law allows, that they are poorly housed and too expensive, that their access to the social measures to which they are entitled is flouted by unscrupulous employers' organizations. We also learn that the Guatemalan consulate, supposed to defend workers against employer abuse, just fired two of its employees who took their legal defense role seriously.
