Statement SITT-IWW against the anti-musulman.es measures Trump.

Statement SITT-IWW against the travel ban for musulman.es, introduced by Trump. Submitted on Monday 6 February 2017 at 18:51

The SITT-IWW is a union for all workers and all workers who opposes all forms of discrimination. So, we are absolutely against the recent travel ban introduced by Trump and aimed Muslims and Muslim. This step towards official discrimination is an attack against all of us. The SITT-IWW has as goal to organize and build a strong network for workers and the most vulnerable workers, which included low-income workers and immigrants. We are affected by the massive resistance that was born immediately after the ban, as, for example, to see so many people show their displeasure at airports across the country. We are particularly proud of the workers of the company New York Taxis, that interrupted service at John F Airport. Kennedy, but also employé.es airlines refused to support the ban. We feel that all sane people understand that we must stand together until all the non-resident.es have the right to enter the country without fear of reprisal or persecution. This solidarity between proletarians is our best weapon to repel wave of racism - we hope that this solidarity is a glimpse of what we can do. We must organize to demand the release of all immigrant.es incarcéré.es and to overturn the travel ban. Our power lies in solidarity. An attack against one or one of us is an attack against all and all!

Poaching in the health sector or the drift of a toxic corporatism

It's the 6 February 2015 has adopted the Amend the organization and governance of the health and social services such as the abolition of regional agencies, also called the Law 10, that would lead to major changes in the structure of the health sector and social services in Quebec. At that time, significant mobilization, made up of trade unions, citizens and even professional, challenged this drastic reform whose effects involve a major upheaval in the organizational structure of the sector.

This law, like so many others, was obviously adopted without any prior consultation with stakeholders. Its main effect is to abolish numerous administrative steps and merge a significant amount of previously autonomous institutions. Before, in the health network, there was 182 institutions. With the Law 10, we spend only 34, either in integrated health centers and social service centers and integrated university health and social services. This reorganization is clearly presented by the Quebec government as a measure "to optimize the resources allocated to the health system" by abolishing the regional health and social services. In the facts, we can especially see another manifestation of fiscal austerity as it will have served as an excuse for cuts of several hundred million dollars in the budget of the Ministry of Health.

But another effect, more obscure, the adoption of this law is the upheaval in the union cutting sector. According to the CSN, it would be "the most important period of union allegiance vote in health and social services ever known in Quebec"1. Concretely, it must be understood that with a monopoly of union representation, the entire health and social services is husked various bargaining units. For each of these units, a union association (usually affiliated to a trade union center) has the exclusive right to represent all the workers who compose (union certification). The current reform, by carrying out the melting of establishments, has the effect of reducing 800 at 100 the union certifications in the health sector. It goes without saying that this is then a focal point for unions because there will be a redefinition of "market share" to divide them. For institutions merged into whom were affiliated trade unions to more than one trade union center (CSN, APTS, FIQ, CSQ, SCFP, FTQ et CSD), a vote, supervised by the Administrative Labor Court, must take place to determine the affiliation of the new merged entity.

These are many of the votes that take place 30 January 24 February 2017, also called poaching of health care and social services.

1) poaching : a plot of the state and the bosses against union action?

poaching, either these periods when it is possible to change union certification, is a process that derives directly from the model of collective labor relations imposed by the Quebec government (inspired himself from the Wagner act American). Indeed, from the moment when a union has the monopoly of representation of all workers and all workers in a given workplace, it is logical to provide some mechanisms to enable them to change their organization as their collective will. It may be a necessary evil, if we think, for example some unions controlled by the company's bosses. However, we also see the deleterious effects.

Thus the Labor code provides for certain specific periods during which it is possible for a union to challenge rival union certification by getting a majority of members. The determination of the times when this is allowed is obviously of great complexity, leaving little room at the initiative of workers, usually dependent es expertise centrally rival, not to mention the appalling number of rules that also govern the conduct of the raid. As is the case in so many other aspects of the legalistic syndicalism, we can see in this technicization union action a phenomenon more harmful to internal democracy, autonomy and vitality of the local union.

In the raid is the manifestation of another distressing practice : inter-union competition. In this context, possibly we are seeing the most hideous expression of corporatist drift Quebec unions, not least because we can easily draw a parallel with the private sector where various competing companies compete for the same market. Rather than putting energy and resources in the service of defending the interests of members (and ultimately emancipation?), the focus is on the distribution of advertising campaigns, holding kiosks in workplaces, production of promotional material, etc. These periods are exceedingly well against-productive in the fight against the employers who plays in these circumstances, a role of mere spectator. Furthermore, in this context toxic, it is quite common that a union continue in the courts competitors. Once again, we are extremely far from the legitimate function of such an organization; is first solidarity among employees es who takes everything at once!

2) Criticism of the current situation : commodification of labor services?

The raiding of the health sector is the perfect illustration of the harmfulness of such a process. Already, as mentioned, one can assume that the money invested is the accumulation of several million. However, beyond simple budgetary concern, the speeches and arguments required by central to convince employees es to vote for their organization are of greatest concern.

To begin, quantitative and financial obsession is quite symptomatic of the hegemony of neoliberal ideology that has managed to contaminate unions. For most plants, it seems the best argument to "sell" their service is in the low cost of union dues. for example, CSQ has not hindered during the holidays to declare that a vote for this central "it's more money for Christmas next year! » (sic). On the side of CUPE, it provides potential members a virtual calculator to determine, depending on the position, category and region of residence, with which organization will in the most for his money. Sure, in light of the results, we see that it is more often than the union would be most advantageous. Short, all this gives the impression of vendors who claim to have "the lowest prices in town. »

Also, it is highly suggestive to note the predominance of theme group insurance in the arguments of all the contenders organizations. Each tries to demonstrate the superiority of the product they offer in comparison with its competitors. Comparative tables are well distributed in order to prove that one is better than the other. Of course, these are not the plants themselves that these insurance-plan autogèrent; their function is rather down to being brokers of their members to negotiate with insurance companies (usually private).

Special mention must be made to the CSN, which seems much less prompt its rivals to focus on the pecuniary benefits of a favorable vote. Effectively, his speech generally carries about its capacity for mobilization and political action. Once this is said, it does not mean that the Confederation is less obsessed with numbers : it seems that his communications specialists have decided that the "strength in numbers" should be the main argument in its favor, since the superiority of the union result from the preponderance of members in comparison with rivals.

All these examples help to establish a constant : the union is no longer presented as an organization by and for members. Rather than seeing the opportunity to unite to force, it seems to be in a paradigm where the union is only a common service provider must offer the cheapest product and the cheapest on the market. Short, one can question whether it would not be the manifestation of a commodification of union action.

That's not counting the corporatist drift that is included in the speech organization numbers. This institutional chauvinism, besides being strongly against-productive if we keep in mind the ultimate objective of the struggle against the employers, is all the more harmful it acts as a pitiful demobilization for the entire labor movement. So, several central and accuse each other of lying to the public or to falsify statistics to promote themselves. Just think of the CSN who accused the FIQ to "conduct a disinformation campaign" and of betraying its members during the last negotiations.

At the corporatism and the separation, emphasize the campaign FIQ which reached the union cynical shallows. His first advertising campaign emphasizes the uniformity of the composition of the membership of the organization which wants an inter-federation. So, with the FIQ, not about to rub vulgar attendants es beneficiaries, Workers kitchens, housekeeping, etc., car, "Unlike other unions, the FIQ, we are 100% Professional Care. "This speech is all the more deplorable that he has not only exacerbated the competition between organizations, but to foster contempt between employees who are called es-es to dissociate themselves by their profession, rather than a united front against the employer.

3) Another vision of unionism

There are certainly many differences between the various trade union organizations currently active in this raid, including issues related to political action, positioning in public debates, the cost of benefits, etc. However, we must also recognize a certain homogeneity as to the means used to play their role of defending workers. Effectively, all these organizations perform the same task in the final : or to negotiate "in good faith" of the collective agreements they co-administer, with employers, for the period during which they are in force. They bring arbitration grievances of their members, will sit on labor relations committees or occupational safety and health, BBQ and will hold, sometimes, participate in events.

However, be aware that another unionism is possible. We can advocate another way to do by and for employees es. Rather than seeing the union as an outside entitée that we do not control, it could be a constellation of workers who join together to conduct a collective struggle against our operators. So, our energies will be focused on the struggle against the employers, to empower us for good of wage exploitation.

Workers associative circles in education unionize with the IWW

PRESS RELEASE - For immediate release
– Montréal, 8 February 2017 - The employee-s associative education circles, from sororities, Students cafes, student cooperatives and education unions, form a new union grouping in the Industrial Union of Workers (SITT-IWW).

This is the aim of countering the growing precariousness of their jobs and working conditions that these workers are united under the banner of the IWW. Although the student movement is often progressive solidarity claims, it is only very rarely that it is committed concretely in struggles for the improvement of employee-s conditions of their associations.

"Our jobs are determined contract, they are often part-time and have no guarantee of hours summer. Sometimes, our jobs are even considered volunteering! We demand job security and decent working conditions. "Said the spokesman of the Union of Workers in Education associative circles, Jasmine Léger. "We believe that a minimum wage 15$ /h, 5 weeks of paid vacation per year 7 paid sick days upon hiring is the minimum that we deserve. "Continued Ms. Léger.

This new union initiative follows the gains made by the Union of Workers of Frite Alors. Indeed, like their peers, the Union of Workers in Education associative circles is based on the principle of unionism solidarity and direct action, for the construction of a report on sustainable force to establish, then raise, a floor working conditions to tackle the precarious.

The Trade Union of Workers in Education associative circles (Sttm) includes e-s-employee of five workplaces, is:
- the Student General Association of the Cégep de Drummondville (AGECD)
- the Student General Association of the Cégep de St-Jérôme (AGES),
- the Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante (ASSÉ),
- the General Association of Montmorency students (AGEM)
- General Association of Students of Collège Édouard-Montpetit (AGECEM).

Tan-e-s to be precarious

Members of various student associations, everywhere throughout the province, relatively regular-e-s to be reminded that we must constantly strive to improve their living conditions and study. On the other hand, the student movement, although often attached with such claims, has only very rarely engaged in concrete struggles for better working conditions.

STTMAE 3.pngThis year, ASSE, with its campaign "Tan-e-s to be poor", launches an assault of making precarious students and takes a position a minimum wage 15$ /h. While we must applaud this stance, it is important to note that this claim is far from implementation within student associations.

From the outset, we stress that we support the campaign "15-5-7" of the IWW Montreal to tackle insecurity at work front. 15$ /h, to be at the poverty line and not below. 5 weeks of paid vacation per year upon hiring, to find a little time for us and generally reduce the time spent at work. 7 paid sick days per year, upon hiring, because being sick, this is not a choice. This is only a minimum wholesale in the fight to stem job insecurity. This should also be the minimum wholesale to offer when one wants to hire someone.

base, we can raise the fact that several e-s-employee hotlines student association or union education often have the 15$ of the acquired time, but not necessarily the rest. The table is really less beautiful if you look at the employee-s side cafe students (often at minimum wage) and in student unions as Coopsco. How credible is a student association that requires a measurement while not applying it in his own cafe? It is high time to remedy, and quick, if these associations are outright accomplices of the student and precarious workers.

SttmThe insecurity is far from stopping at this level in the voluntary sector in education. Indeed, the majority of jobs offered by student associations and student cafes are insecure by definition. Jobs in particular contract, often part-time, atypical jobs or on call, layoffs during the summer; While some of these measures may satisfy some workers and some workers, I must say they are, more often than, a precarious way to the employee-s. If we do not necessarily miracle solution to offer face this kind of situation, it would still be good to ask when there will hire, and not try to reproduce what is done in the current capitalist enterprise.

All these reasons are those that pushed us to organize ourselves as a Union of Workers and Workers Associative Media in Education (Sttm). Indeed, like several student associations, we believe in fighting unionism to assert our claims and we want to organize to improve our living conditions. For us, it's time to fight insecurity even in our present progressive circles. We also adhere to a revolutionary vision of syndicalism that allows, now, organize tomorrow's society in the shell of the old.

Because we also, your employee-s, are tanned-e-s to be poor!

Letter of the outgoing editor of the industrial worker

After 8 years of loyal servicess the publisher of the newspaper office theIndustrial Worker (IW), the fellow worker Diane Krauthamer decided in the fall 2016 not to represent and make room for someone else. We transcribe here the letter it published in the latest edition of the IW and thank her warmly for everything she has done. We also take a few lines to wish the best of luck in fellow worker Roberta McNair, elected majority in the international referendum for the editor position for the term IW 2017.

Fellow workers,
After 8 wonderful years, it will have been my last issue as editor of theIndustrial Worker. Although I intends to continue working on this publication on a voluntary basis, I resigned from my position as editor of theIndustrial Worker at the end of 2016. A-e another comrade to be élu.e take my place.

When I started this job in the beginning 2009, je did not have much experience with the IWW. At that time, I lived in New York, helping with the local sectione support
of Union workers at Starbucks and organizing campaigns in food warehouses in Brooklyn and Queens. My knowledge and my experience with Wobblies worldwide forestayint rather limiteds.

Diane Krauthamer, editor of theIndustrial Worker.

By becoming editor of the IW, I had the pleasure to exchange stories with hundreds of comrades worldwide, people working in various industries, occupying various functions and activist for many causes work-oriented. Although our communications did summarized in a few email exchanges, it was exciting for me to learn about different projects, campaigns, events, organizing victories, experiences, opinions, and ideas of each person. Despite setbacks and occasional episodes of overwork, I always found the motivation to continue my work on the IW and my involvement with the union was successful. My involvement with the IWW continues to be inspired by the countless fellow workers to keep alive the momentum Our union. I would have given up long ago if it was not for you.

While my job on the newspaper be completed soon (for the moment), my work for the union is far from being. My first priority is to build and strengthen the IWW. Over the years, I came to realize that any attempt is futile unless we fight against all forms of discrimination in the process. And this is imperative if we want to grow our strength. As certain.es of you may remember is, Over the years pastes, through my editorial work, I encouraged open debate on these issues. Personally, I think the biggest obstacle to the growth of the IWW's sexism, and I do not believe that acting as if the problem did not exist will solve the. The IW is the official publication of the IWW, and as such, I think it should be the mission of this publication to encourage further dialogue that can help us work on these complex issues.

I chose to include these discussions in the pages ofIndustrial Worker for this very reason. If we are honest about who we are, we must be honests on how we can improve. The members potentiel.les will see this and will want to join an organization that recognizes its problems and is working to resolve. The ancien.nes Members may even return to the organization s'il.les see that we fight openly against a patriarchal culture internally. The members actuel.les may be thwarted.is about the opinion of a person, more il.les can also meet and have their views publishedes, and this is what makes it effective dialogue. On the other side, the patron.nes who read the IW, will not know what to deal with such a strong organization.

As I pass the torch to the next editor or the next editor of the IW, I encourage that person to incorporate a similar editorial mission in his work diary, just like I did with mine. Meanwhile, I will continue to build a stronger and more inclusive union. my aims remain the same, regardless of my location.

I hope my work inIndustrial Worker you will be inspired, as yours certainly inspired me.

in solidarity,

Diane Krauthamer

Editor ofIndustrial Worker.

ACTIVIST IWW INJURED SHOOTING A GUN BLOW IN SEATTLE

Friday 20 January and Saturday 21 January, there were many anti-trump demonstrations and anti-capitalist. When the passing by the University of Whashington in Seattle, to counter and prevent a pro-fascist speech trump Milo Yiannopoulos (white supremacist), a member of the IWW (syndicalist confederation) was shot at close range.

Strikes against the inauguration of Trump!

If the multitude of memes and parodies of video White supremacist leader Richard Spencer, is making hit in the face, would alone suffice to justify any mobilization surrounding the famous # J20 of the inauguration of Donald Trump, Combat the Trade Union Leaders, true to its serious revolutionary nevertheless like to present you some of the strikes that marked the national day of protest against the new self-proclaimed spokesman of the working class.

It seems important to mention that self-proclamation, because if Trump was elected by only 26% roads, is to say that 74% of Americans did not vote for him. So we made the 74% of the Americans 20 January? And certain.es Clinton may have regretted, Sanders or even Stalin, here we salute the workers who organisé.es to voice their anger and refusal to support the fascist populism 45th president.

At the Port of Oakland, in California, the absence of workers forced the closure of a marine terminal, temporarily suspending the movement of ships, completely blocking the activities of loading and unloading and slowing trucking operations in such a way, a monster traffic jam took shape in the surrounding streets. According to Mike Zampa, communications director for the Port of Oakland, it is near 90% any port activity which was stopped. Citing syndiqué.es Local 10 of the'International Longshore Warehouse Union, "Trump is not the solution, it is the problem ".

usastrikeMeanwhile in Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota, janitors involved cleaning various branches of Home Depot (one counts a score in the metropolitan area), organized strike 2 hours to protest against low wages offered by the subcontractor hiring them and the political agenda for which Trump, one of America's problems would be too high wages. The day before the enseignant.es of theSaint Paul Federation of Teachersorganizing a demonstration calling for protection étudiant.es and their families. And always in the field of education, but this time in Boston, the 375 Northeastern University Service employé.es stopped work to join the various events taking place in the city.

Even the arts joined the protest movement. So many museums like the Queens Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, le National Museum of American Indian de Washington, le Denver Art Museum ou le Boston Contemporary Art Institute, as well as numerous art galleries and theaters closed their doors to join the Art Strike which already involved more 500 film artists, music, dance and sculpture.

Recalling the numerous strike women knew that different countries during their history, there are over 4 millions of women who marched in cities across the US, dont 1 million only in Washington. in parallel, many March of Women took place in more than 600 cities around the world. The organizers of the March Womens speak for a grand total of 5 million for walkers 20 January.

If the day 20 January did not mark the General Strike that certain.es would have liked to see and, let's face it, would have been more appropriate, the many actions that took place across the United States and whose sample presented here represents only a tiny portion, nevertheless demonstrates the will to fight Ame workersricain.es. Comrades of the Montreal Local were also in New York last week to discuss the organization and mobilization opportunities for a massive work stoppage. A meeting in which more than 80 people from different autonomous groups, union and political participated.

The struggle continues, the future is ours!

Agreement at Frite Alors! Rachel

Friday 15 December 2016, the employees of Frite Alors! Rachel finally venu.es an agreement with the employer. A major shift for the Wobblies who take openly storefront in Montreal and a first for the labor movement that saw the birth of new ways to operate outside of the legal framework limitations.

We remember that the Press release send it 27 August to announce their affiliation to the Industrial Union of Workers and Workers - Industrial Workers of the World (SITT-IWW), included a list of items they wanted to see and they change their workplace. It talked among other kitchen salary increases and service, annual increases, standardization of training, a priority internally when opening new positions, a guaranteed floor of hours, of compensation for shifts in stand-by and sick leave.
